Steel wire rod, mill-direct from China to Kazakhstan
A Kazakh wire-drawing plant needed a dependable supply of low-carbon wire rod without trader margins. We found the mill, walked the coil yard ourselves, checked heat tags, strapping and coil weights before the balance was paid, and shipped 1,000 tonnes by rail on DAP terms.

The challenge
The client draws wire and makes fasteners and mesh in Kazakhstan, so wire rod is not a purchase — it is their raw material, the one line item where a few dollars per tonne decides the year. Every Chinese quote they had collected came from a trading company: a margin on top, and no way to know which mill the steel would actually come from.
Wire rod also fails quietly. The wrong carbon content, a scaled or scratched surface, coils that weigh less than the packing list — and it is the drawing line that stops, not the paperwork. Paying for 1,000 tonnes they had never seen and discovering the problem at their own plant was the risk they wanted taken off the table.

What we did
- 1
Reached the mill, not the trader
We searched Chinese-language sources and our own metals network for producers rolling low-carbon wire rod in the client's diameter range, and confirmed who actually makes the steel instead of re-selling someone else's coils.
- 2
Walked the coil yard
Our team went to the site and spent the day among the stacks: heat-number tags inside the coils, surface condition, strapping and coil weights — the things you can only confirm standing next to the steel.
- 3
Fixed price and spec in Mandarin
Chemistry, diameter tolerance, coil weight, packing and price were agreed at the mill in Mandarin and written into the contract, so nothing depended on a translated email or a trader's promise.
- 4
Inspected, then moved by rail
Coils were checked against the spec and the marking before the balance was released, then loaded and railed to Kazakhstan on DAP terms, with the shipping and customs paperwork handled end to end.

The result
The client received 1,000 tonnes of wire rod at a mill-direct price, from a producer our team had physically inspected, with heat marking that matched the documents and coil weights that matched the packing list.
The drawing line ran on schedule, and a one-off purchase turned into a repeatable channel: the client now re-orders against a verified spec from a known mill instead of restarting the search with every batch.
Wire rod is our raw material — we cannot afford surprises in it. Silk Way found the mill themselves, went to the yard in person, and the steel arrived in Kazakhstan exactly as the documents said.
What importers say after working with us
Sourcing wins across steel, solar, energy storage, construction materials and supplier verification. Client names are withheld for confidentiality.
- Steel & metals
We needed 200 tonnes of hot-rolled coil and kept getting quotes from traders. Silk Way took us straight to the mill, verified it, and inspected the load before we paid the balance.
