Wire rod and drawn wire for a distributor in Astana

A metals distributor in Astana was buying wire rod and drawn wire from whoever quoted cheapest that month, and getting lots that behaved differently every time. We audited one mill end to end — rolling mill, drawing shop, coil yard — and put 500 tonnes on rail to Astana from a single verified source.

The challenge

The distributor sells wire rod and drawn wire into the Astana construction market, where the customer notices immediately if a lot behaves differently from the last one. Buying from whichever trader quoted best that month meant the steel came from a different mill each time — same nominal grade on paper, different behaviour on the drawing line and in the customer's hands.

They also wanted both positions from one source. Rod and drawn wire bought from two separate suppliers meant two sets of lead times, two quality stories and two people to chase when something arrived wrong — and no way, from Astana, to tell whether either supplier actually produced anything at all.

What we did

  1. 1

    Audited the rolling mill

Our team walked the rolling mill where the rod is produced — the line, the cooling bed and the coil formers — to confirm the client would be buying from an actual producer with the capacity to repeat the order.

  2. 2

    Checked the drawing shop too

Because the client needed drawn wire as well, we inspected the drawing blocks and winding stations in the same plant, so both positions could come from one audited site instead of two unrelated suppliers.

  3. 3

Walked the coil yard and stock

In the yard we went through the stacks: coil condition and surface, despatch tags and marking, and what was physically available — enough to confirm the mill could ship the agreed volume when promised, not just quote it.

  4. 4

    Inspected, then railed to Astana

The lot was checked against the spec and the marking before the balance was released, then loaded and moved by rail to Astana on DAP terms, with the export and customs paperwork handled end to end.

The result

The distributor now takes both wire rod and drawn wire from a single mill our team has been inside, so the lots are consistent and their own customers stop noticing a difference between deliveries.

500 tonnes reached Astana on DAP terms against a spec that is now fixed and repeatable — the next order is a re-run of a verified position rather than another round of trader roulette.

We used to buy from whoever was cheapest that month and explain the difference to our customers afterwards. Now it is one mill that Silk Way has walked through themselves, and the deliveries into Astana match each other.

What importers say after working with us

Sourcing wins across steel, solar, energy storage, construction materials and supplier verification. Client names are withheld for confidentiality.

We needed 200 tonnes of hot-rolled coil and kept getting quotes from traders. Silk Way took us straight to the mill, verified it, and inspected the load before we paid the balance.
