Use 1688 for the lowest domestic prices if you can source in Chinese and run your own QC; Alibaba for an English, export-ready start; Made-in-China and Global Sources for industrial goods and verified electronics factories; the Canton Fair to meet suppliers in person. None of them verifies the factory or checks quality for you.
None of the popular platforms — 1688, Alibaba, Made-in-China, Global Sources, or the Canton Fair — buys the goods for you. They are catalogues and entry points: they show suppliers, but they don’t verify the factory, don’t control batch quality, and don’t answer for logistics. For a wholesale importer bringing in container-sized loads, the key question is not “where is it cheaper,” but “where do I find the real manufacturer and how do I make the payment safe.” Below is a breakdown of each platform for a specific buyer profile, and the line where the marketplace ends and a full sourcing cycle begins.
In brief: which platform for whom
If you have no time to read — here is the orientation. The details and pitfalls of each platform follow.
- 1688 — China’s domestic wholesale market; mostly factories and small producers. Price level — the lowest. Access for a foreigner — only through an agent in China (a Chinese account is required).
- Alibaba — global B2B; the widest assortment, Trade Assurance deal protection. Price level — higher (export support is priced in). Access — direct: multilingual, international payments.
- Made-in-China — industrial equipment, components, raw materials, LED. Price level — slightly below Alibaba. Access — direct; convenient as a second channel for cross-checking.
- Global Sources — electronics and tech; a stricter supplier filter. Price level — higher, but a lower risk of defects. Access — direct + trade shows in Hong Kong.
- Canton Fair — a live trade show: samples and negotiations in one place. Price level — depends on the deal. Access — in person in Guangzhou (a visa is required).
1688 — China’s domestic wholesale market
1688.com belongs to Alibaba Group and serves the domestic Chinese market. Factories and small producers dominate here, and prices are usually 10–30% lower than on the export platforms: sellers don’t price in export support and international communication.
The main catch is access. A foreigner cannot directly register and pay on 1688: it requires a Chinese Alipay account and effectively a Chinese legal entity. The interface is Chinese only, and delivery is domestic within China. So for an overseas buyer 1688 works only through an agent in China who buys the goods, consolidates them and ships the batch.
Another trap: despite the reputation as a “factory marketplace,” some sellers on 1688 are resellers too, sourcing goods at wholesale markets like Yiwu. A low catalogue price does not guarantee you have reached the manufacturer — it is worth understanding separately how to tell a manufacturer from a trader. Why domestic prices are lower than export ones is covered in more detail in 1688 vs Alibaba: why prices are lower.
Alibaba — global B2B for getting started
Alibaba.com is the largest international B2B marketplace, aimed at foreign buyers: a multilingual interface, global payments, and the Trade Assurance deal-protection tool. It is the most convenient entry point for a first round of supplier shortlisting and price requests.
The platform mixes real factories and trading companies in its results, so the statuses must be read carefully: Gold Supplier is a paid membership that confirms business registration but not a production audit; Verified Supplier implies a third-party factory audit. Prices on Alibaba are higher than on 1688 because they include export support.
It is important to understand the limit: Trade Assurance protects the payment at the platform level, but it does not catch discrepancies in materials, contents and marking — that is the job of independent quality control. Before prepayment, a supplier verification checklist is useful.
Made-in-China — industrial goods and technical sourcing
Made-in-China.com (MIC) is a Chinese platform with a state “registration”; supplier verification is cross-checked against the state register of legal entities. Its strength is industrial equipment, components, raw materials and LED lighting. Prices are often slightly below Alibaba, so MIC is convenient as a second channel for cross-checking prices and finding alternative suppliers.
The registration data of any Chinese counterparty should be checked in the official state register GSXT, rather than relying on platform badges alone.
Global Sources — electronics and verified factories
Global Sources has operated since 1971 (initially as industry catalogues), and online since 1995. Its logic is the opposite of Alibaba’s: fewer suppliers, but a stricter filter. The platform is historically strong in electronics and tech, with more thorough factory vetting before listing. Prices here are usually higher, yet the risk of a poor-quality batch is statistically lower.
Besides the online catalogue, Global Sources runs large trade shows in Hong Kong (spring and autumn sessions) — a chance to see samples in person, if your category is electronics or components.
Canton Fair — China’s largest trade fair
The Canton Fair (China Import and Export Fair) has been held in Guangzhou since 1957, twice a year, and is split into three phases by industry. It is what no online catalogue gives: factories, samples and negotiations live in one place.
Spring 2026 session (139th fair): phase 1 — 15–19 April (electronics, machinery, equipment, tools), phase 2 — 23–27 April (home, furniture, decor, building materials), phase 3 — 1–5 May (consumer goods, textiles, medical products). Autumn 2026 session: 15–19 October, 23–27 October, and 31 October — 4 November.
Online registration is free; a badge on site costs around 200 RMB. Verify the current dates and registration on the official Canton Fair website. For a container-scale buyer the fair is effective when there is a clear plan of phases and on-the-ground support — otherwise it is easy to get lost in the scale of the exhibition.
Why a platform is only the start of the funnel
No marketplace runs the sourcing for you. The moment you’ve found a listing, the most important part begins — and this is exactly where wholesalers lose money:
- The catalogue price ≠ the cost of the batch in your warehouse. $0.89 for a cable on 1688 easily turns into $2+ once you add duty, freight, inspection and packaging. Only a landed-cost calculation with the right Incoterms gives the real figure.
- “Verified” ≠ a quality guarantee. A badge confirms company registration, not production capabilities; certificates can be expired.
- Factory or trader. The platform won’t tell you directly who you are dealing with — that is established by verification.
- Payment security. Staged payment and verification of bank details (protection against account substitution) are beyond the reach of any platform.
These are exactly the steps a full sourcing cycle closes: sourcing → supplier verification → production control → batch QC → logistics. In short — money is saved not by the “right website,” but by verifying the factory before paying.
How to choose a platform for your profile
- A test batch and idea hunting: Alibaba — deal protection and multilingual support.
- The lowest possible price, ready to work through an agent: 1688.
- Industrial equipment, components, raw materials: Made-in-China.
- Electronics with heightened quality requirements: Global Sources.
- Ready to travel to China and see samples in person: Canton Fair (and for electronics, also the Global Sources shows in Hong Kong).
In practice, experienced importers combine platforms: they search on one, cross-check the price on another, and run the deal through a trusted partner in China who takes on the verification, quality control and shipping. The MOQ, meanwhile, is almost always negotiable — it is worth knowing how to lower it before your first enquiry.
Conclusion
A platform is a search tool, not a guarantee of the result. The choice of platform depends on the product, the volume, and whether you can physically be in China. But whatever the platform, what saves a container of your goods is not a website, but a verified factory, batch control and a safe payment.
