The driver fails, not the LED
The single most useful fact about buying LED lighting: most field failures are driver failures. LED chips typically outlive the product; the electronics that feed them do not. Cheap drivers use low-grade electrolytic capacitors that degrade with heat, and a fixture that runs hot kills its own driver.
The practical consequences:
- Specify the driver by brand and model, not "high-quality driver". This is the highest-leverage line in the whole specification.
- Ask what happens at temperature. A driver rated for an ambient the fixture never sees is a specification on paper only.
- Treat the heat sink as a functional part. Aluminium mass and design determine junction temperature, which determines both lumen depreciation and driver life. A visibly lighter housing is a cheaper product, not a cleverer one.
This is exactly the kind of substitution that happens quietly between sample and batch — the mechanism is in why an approved sample becomes a defective batch, and the countermeasure is a no-substitution clause in the contract with the factory.
The four numbers that matter
1. Actual luminous flux, measured. Quoted lumens are often the sum of chip ratings, not the output of the finished fixture after optical and thermal losses. Ask for an LM-79 test report on the complete luminaire from an identifiable laboratory — not a chip datasheet.
2. Real power draw. A "50 W" fixture that measures 38 W is not a bargain; it is a 38 W fixture. Measured input power should appear in the same report.
3. Lumen maintenance (LM-80 / L70). How much output remains after a stated number of hours. Claims of "50,000 hours" without a maintenance figure and a test basis are marketing.
4. CRI and colour consistency (SDCM/MacAdam). For retail, hospitality and architectural work, colour variation between units in the same order is the complaint you will actually receive. Specify binning tolerance, not just "4000 K".
Add IP rating with the test standard for outdoor products, flicker performance where the application is sensitive, and surge protection level for street and industrial lighting.
Certification is not optional in this category
Lighting is electrical equipment, so it carries the full compliance load: low-voltage and EMC requirements, restricted substances, and market-specific marking. Buying practice that works in this cluster
- Order a sample and measure it, ideally through an independent laboratory, before committing to volume
- Ask for the bill of materials: LED chip brand and model, driver brand and model, housing alloy and weight, optics
- Fix the BOM contractually and require written approval for any change
- Run a pilot batch on first orders — the case is in the pilot run before mass production
- Inspect with function testing, not visual checks: switch-on, measured power, colour consistency across the batch, IP verification on outdoor products, per quality control when importing from China
- Understand the warranty. A five-year warranty from a factory with three years of history, covering replacement fixtures ex-works China, is worth calculating before it becomes a selling point
Logistics notes
Luminaires are light and bulky, so containers fill by volume — packaging design directly determines landed cost per unit, as in packaging development in China. Fixtures with glass or delicate optics need drop-tested packing, and outdoor units with sealed housings should be checked for moisture ingress in transit, per packing for sea freight.
In lighting, the parts you can see — the housing, the finish, the shape — are the cheap parts. The parts that decide whether the product survives are the driver and the heat sink, and neither of them appears in a photograph.
