Steel Pipes from China Wholesale: Seamless vs Welded, Standards, QC

Buyers importing steel pipes from China wholesale work at container scale — from one full 20-foot load and up: oil & gas operators and service contractors, water utilities and municipal networks, construction and steel-structure firms, machine-building plants, and scaffolding manufacturers. Retail buyers won't find anything here — this is about lots where one decision (seamless or welded, which grade, which wall-thickness tolerance) sets both the contract price and whether the pipe survives a pressure test on site. Seamless vs Welded: the choice that drives the price

Every steel pipe falls into one of two families by manufacturing method, and that choice drives up to 80% of the cost.

Seamless pipe (SMLS) is made by piercing a solid steel billet — the wall has no weld seam at all. This gives a uniform structure around the full circumference and the highest pressure resistance, which is why seamless is specified for oil & gas, steam lines, hydraulics, and anything running under high internal pressure or cyclic load. You pay for it: seamless is noticeably more expensive than welded (harder processing, lower metal yield), and diameters are limited — typically up to 508 mm. This is the domain of ASTM A106 (seamless for high temperature) and API 5L in the seamless variant.

Welded pipe is formed from strip or plate rolled and welded along a seam. It is cheaper and available across a wider diameter range, but the seam itself is the critical control point. By welding method, welded pipe splits into three types:

  • ERW (electric resistance welded) — longitudinal seam, no filler. The most common and cheapest type for small-to-medium diameters (typically up to 610 mm). The standard for water supply, structures, scaffolding, general purpose — ASTM A53, API 5L PSL1.
  • LSAW (longitudinal submerged arc welded) — longitudinal seam from thick plate. Large diameters and heavy walls for oil & gas transmission lines and piling. Standard API 5L PSL2.
  • SSAW / HSAW (spiral submerged arc welded) — spiral seam. A cheaper way to reach large diameters from narrower strip; used for water, piling, and low-pressure mains.

Simple rule: for pressure duty and critical lines — seamless or LSAW/API 5L PSL2; for structures, water and scaffolding — ERW/SSAW. Standards and grades: what to put in the spec

Ordering "just pipe, 108×4" is an invitation to substitution. Always put the standard and steel grade in the spec:

  • API 5L — line pipe for oil and gas, in two quality levels: PSL1 (base) and PSL2 (tighter chemistry, mechanical and NDT requirements — for critical transmission). Grades Gr B, X42–X70.
  • ASTM A53 — general and structural pipe, water supply, low pressure; types F (furnace-welded), E (ERW), S (seamless).
  • ASTM A106 — seamless for high-temperature service (steam, power), grades A/B/C.
  • S235 / Q235 — structural carbon steel for hollow sections, scaffolding, steel structures. Q235 is the Chinese GB equivalent.
  • EN 10219 (cold-formed) and EN 10210 (hot-finished) — European standards for structural hollow sections (SHS/RHS/CHS).

Verify the exact official content against the primary source — for example, the API 5L specification on the API site. For customs, pipe is classified under HS codes: 7305 — large-diameter line pipe (over 406.4 mm), 7306 — other welded and seamless small/medium-diameter tube. The right code affects your duty rate and whether the shipment clears cleanly.

What to check on a Chinese pipe: four risk points

This is where the difference between full-cycle sourcing (search → factory verification → production/QC → logistics) and a "just ship it" model shows up. The main control points:

  • Wall-thickness tolerance. This is the most common cost-cut at Chinese mills: the pipe stays within "commercial" tolerance but consistently near the low limit — invisible to the eye, but metal and load capacity are shorted. Fix the nominal wall and the minus limit in the contract, and measure the wall at several points during inspection.
  • Correct markings. The pipe should carry the standard, grade, size, heat number and mill logo. Missing or "generic" marking is a signal you're looking at stock of unknown origin, not a mill run made to your standard.
  • Hydrostatic testing and NDT. For pressure pipe — hydrostatic pressure testing; for the weld seam — non-destructive testing (UT/ultrasonic, sometimes radiographic). This must be in the spec and confirmed in documents, not "verbally".
  • Mill Test Certificate (MTC, 3.1 per EN 10204). The mill certificate with the actual heat chemistry and mechanical properties of your specific lot. The classic trap is "sample OK, batch defective": the trial pipe conforms, then the production run is quietly cheapened. Coatings and container loading

By surface protection, pipe comes as: black (bare, base option), galvanized (hot-dip zinc — for water, outdoor structures, longer service life), and factory anti-corrosion 3LPE (three-layer polyethylene) for buried and subsea pipelines. Coating materially affects price — agree it in the spec, not "however it turns out".

Pipe nests one section inside another, so a container is often loaded to its weight limit rather than its volume — a 20-footer goes "heavy" long before the space fills.
