Solar Inverters from China for Business: How to Choose String, Hybrid or Central for Your Project

If you are an EPC contractor, energy developer or a business building your own generation from 100 kW upward, the inverter is the most technical node in the project — and the easiest place to get it wrong. The short answer: for commercial rooftops use three-phase string inverters, for sites with storage and a need for backup during outages use hybrid inverters, and for utility scale use central or modular inverters. But the badge on the enclosure matters far less than how well the inverter is matched to your panels, battery and grid code. Below is how to choose correctly — and avoid grey-market units with locked firmware.

Inverter types and where each one fits

The inverter market in 2025–2026 is almost entirely Chinese: according to Wood Mackenzie, Huawei and Sungrow have topped the global supplier ranking for 11 consecutive years and together hold roughly 55% of the market, and nine of the ten largest vendors are Chinese companies. But the decision starts with architecture, not brand.

  • String inverters — the working standard for commercial and industrial (C&I) rooftops. Panels are wired into series "strings", and multiple MPPT inputs let you split the array into sections with different orientations. Best price-per-watt for rooftops from tens of kW to several MW.
  • Hybrid inverters — for projects with energy storage and a backup requirement. They manage power flow between panels, battery, grid and loads in one unit, and provide a backup/UPS transfer to battery power when the grid drops. The fastest-growing category as battery prices fall.
  • Central and modular inverters — for utility scale (plants from several MW). One high-power block or a set of modules serves large fields; lower cost per watt, but less granularity and more sensitivity to shading.
  • Microinverters and power optimisers (MLPE) — one device per panel or panel pair. They deliver a 10–25% gain on shaded or complex roofs but cost more; on large C&I projects they are used selectively.

How to size and match the system

The classic mistake of inexperienced importers is to pick an inverter "by kilowatts" and never reconcile it with the actual array. Correct selection comes down to three checks.

String design and the MPPT window. The panels' open-circuit voltage (Voc) on the coldest day must stay below the inverter's maximum DC voltage, and the operating voltage (Vmp) on the hottest day must stay inside the MPPT window. Each string's short-circuit current (Isc) must sit within the input limits. These limits determine how many panels can go on one MPPT.

DC:AC ratio (array oversizing). The DC array is usually built larger than the inverter's AC rating: for commercial systems the typical range is 1.1–1.3, and under certain conditions designers push it to 1.2–1.5. Moderate oversizing adds yield in the morning and evening shoulder hours; when clipping losses fall within 0.2–3%, the ratio is well chosen.

Matching the battery (BESS). This is the item competitors most often skip. A hybrid inverter is compatible with a battery only when three things line up: the voltage class (high-voltage systems such as Huawei LUNA2000 or BYD HVS/HVM versus low-voltage 48 V rack batteries like Pylontech/Dyness), the BMS communication protocol (CAN or RS485; modern systems use closed-loop dialogue between inverter and BMS), and an approved battery profile in the firmware. Specify the inverter and the battery energy storage system (BESS) together, not separately, and reconcile panel make and capacity — the details connect to choosing panels for your project.

An inverter does not "fit any battery" — only pairs where voltage class, BMS protocol and firmware profile all match are actually compatible.

Certification, grid code and warranty

Grid code is the second thing sellers tend to gloss over. An inverter must meet IEC 62109 safety standards and support the grid code your distribution operator requires: in Europe that is EN 50549 and VDE-AR-N 4105, in several markets IEEE 1547 (the 2018 edition mandates ride-through — staying online through brief voltage or frequency dips). Without the right grid-code profile, the operator may refuse interconnection and a shipment of inverters can sit stranded on site.

For hybrid systems, also check backup parameters: transfer time to backup, off-grid capability and generator compatibility. And separately, the warranty: factory warranty on string inverters is typically 5–10 years, longer on battery modules — and it is valid only for officially imported units with a registered serial number.

Emerging-market context: backup, storage and duties

Across markets from Ukraine to the MENA region and Africa, business demand has shifted from "just PV" to "PV + storage + backup" as grid reliability becomes a board-level concern. A hybrid inverter with a battery keeps critical loads running through outages — increasingly a project requirement, not an option. In Ukraine specifically, a tax incentive applies: the exemption from VAT and import duty on energy equipment — solar, wind, storage and inverters — has been extended to 1 January 2029, and we cover how to apply it correctly at customs in our note on the VAT and duty exemption. For other markets, verify local interconnection and certification requirements before you order.

The key risk is grey-market import: units with no official warranty, locked or regionally incompatible firmware, sometimes with faked serial numbers. Such an inverter may fail registration in the manufacturer's monitoring portal and leave you without warranty. That makes supplier verification mandatory: a genuine factory or authorised distributor, real certificates, matching serials.
