Galvanized Steel Coil DX51D from China: How to Order GI and Avoid Zinc Substitution

Buyers who import galvanized steel coil DX51D from China order at container scale (20–25 tonnes and up): roofing and metal-tile makers, sandwich-panel factories, construction and HVAC companies, steel service centres, and metal fabricators. The direct answer for a wholesale importer: the spec that matters most here is not the steel grade — it's the zinc coating weight Z (g/m², both sides combined). That single number is where the most common Chinese substitution happens, and it's the one you must lock into the contract before you pay a deposit.

Below: what GI steel is, which grades and zinc classes exist, how the per-tonne price is built, and how to avoid paying for Z275 while receiving Z100.

What galvanized (GI) steel coil is, and which grades to order

GI (galvanized iron) is cold-rolled steel finished with a hot-dip zinc coating — the strip is passed through a bath of molten zinc. Zinc acts as both a barrier and a sacrificial anode: it corrodes in place of the steel, so a galvanized sheet lasts for years where bare metal would rust in a single season. The base metal under the coating is cold-rolled coil (CR), so GI quality inherits the quality of that substrate.

Grades for different jobs:

  • DX51D — the baseline forming grade, by far the most common for roofing, corrugated sheet, gutters and ducting. The workhorse of the market.
  • DX52D / DX53D — softer grades for deeper drawing and tighter bends, where DX51D would crack at the fold.
  • SGCC — the Japanese JIS equivalent, often quoted in Chinese price lists as a synonym for DX51D.
  • S350GD / S550GD — structural galvanized grades with a guaranteed yield strength, used for load-bearing profiles, purlins and framing.

The HS code for flat galvanized steel is heading 7210 (flat-rolled iron/steel, plated or coated with zinc). The key point for a buyer: the steel grade governs the mechanics (forming, strength), but the service life of the finished product is governed by an entirely different parameter — the zinc class.

The critical spec: zinc coating class Z (g/m²)

This is the line in the spec sheet that decides everything. The Z class is the mass of zinc in grams per square metre, totalled across both faces of the sheet:

  • Z100 — 100 g/m², a thin coating for indoor or short-life applications.
  • Z140 — a mid-range mass-market class for moderate exposure.
  • Z180 — reinforced protection for external structures.
  • Z275 — 275 g/m², the standard for roofing and façades, the longest service life in this range.

The logic is simple: more zinc means longer corrosion life. Under identical conditions, Z275 will outlast Z100 several times over. Yet a Z100 sheet and a Z275 sheet look identical — both bright, both "galvanized". And that's exactly what the scam relies on.

The most expensive line in a GI spec sheet isn't the steel grade — it's the number after the letter Z. You cannot verify it by eye. Only by lab test.

The #1 scam: sold as Z275, shipped as Z80–Z120

The most common substitution in Chinese GI: the price list and invoice say Z275, but the coil that actually loads into the container carries a Z80–Z120 coating. The sheet looks identical, the steel thickness is the same, the "documents" are present. The difference is in the grams of zinc you can't see. A roof built from that sheet starts rusting in two or three years instead of twenty — and the complaint lands on you from your own customer, not on the mill 7,000 km away.

This is the classic "sample OK, batch defective" case: the sample they send may be genuine Z275, while the production run is quietly "value-engineered" down. The zinc gap between Z275 and Z100 is real money per tonne, which is exactly why the temptation to cut it is so strong.

How to protect yourself — three layers, all three mandatory:

  • Write the Z class into the contract as its own line: grade + thickness + width + zinc class Z275 (not just "galvanized"). Without it, you legally never ordered Z275.
  • Demand a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) for the batch — the mill's certificate with chemistry and actual coating weight. How to read and validate an MTC is covered in our guide to the mill test certificate on Chinese steel.
  • Order a coating-weight test at pre-shipment inspection — an independent lab strips the coating and weighs the zinc. It's the only way to prove the fact before the container leaves port; details are in our guide to quality inspections on imports from China.

The standard for hot-dip coated flat products is EN 10346; it's the reference you cite when agreeing Z classes in the contract.

Per-tonne price logic: what makes up the GI cost

You can't quote a galvanized coil as a single figure — it's built from three parts, and each moves independently:

  • Base metal — the price of the cold-rolled substrate (which in turn tracks the hot-rolled coil, HRC). This is the foundation of the cost.
  • Zinc content — the main driver of the gap between Z100 and Z275. Zinc is an exchange-traded metal; its price moves with the zinc quotation on the London Metal Exchange (LME). The higher the Z class, the more zinc per tonne of steel — hence the premium.
  • Processing — the cost of the hot-dip galvanizing line, coiling, slitting, and the oil or chromate passivation finish.

So the correct enquiry is never "how much is galvanized" but "price for DX51D, thickness X, width Y, class Z275, volume — one container". The price gap between Z140 and Z275 on the same steel can be substantial precisely because of the zinc — and anyone offering Z275 "at a Z100 price" is either mistaken or setting up a substitution. Prices move weekly with HRC and LME, so a live quote is always taken from the mill against a specific date and specification. Frame any figure you see as a range, not a fixed number.

Applications and why buyers import direct

GI coil is the raw material for whole production lines: roofing and metal tiles, corrugated and profiled sheet, guttering systems, sandwich panels, HVAC ducting, framing and purlins (for the S grades), enclosure bodies, automotive components. For all of these, the purchase price per tonne feeds directly into the cost of the finished product.

Buying direct from China gives a wholesaler two things a local trader can't: the mill price without a middleman's markup, and control over the specification — you order the exact Z class and exact grade, not "whatever's in the warehouse". But that same directness opens the door to zinc substitution, which is why importing GI without a coating inspection turns into a lottery.
